This project that was funded in June 2011 by the New England Biolabs Foundation (NEBF) a US based foundation with a vision to empower primary school pupil on natural and human impact on our environment and ways to foster environmental beauty throughout simple door activities. Immediately after the Head Teachers of 30 primary schools and some volunteers were trained, environmental clubs were installed in some of these schools while others restructured to better accommodate our activities. In each of these schools, there was restitution of the training with all teachers involved and one in each school was selected to coordinate the environmental club and its activities. Our manual facilitated this process. Our purpose for designing the manual was that it should serve as a road map to the clubs activities or facilitate club meetings as well as to propose to our Ministry of Basic Education for inception into our basic education study program. The club meetings took place once every week in each of these schools with a small quiz each month. Our weekly radio program “Environmental Watch” at Ocean City Radio reached out to the 150,000 inhabitants of the Limbe municipality during the life span of the project. The radio program was designed in such a way that we had contributions and questions from listeners through phone calls during the program. During the life span of the Radio program, we registered 59 questions and contribution from listeners. Early 2012, OGCEYOD started making plans for tree planting and excursions to disaster sites and sites were environmental beauty is showcased. The landslide area in Mabeta, Limbe was visited, an area where the earth swallowed a couple of houses and 25 persons. We planted some nested trees on this hill side area and an old woman who witnessed the landslide narrated the story to the pupil. We visited the Limbe Beach with the intention to collected waste by the shores and later sorted them out in a discussion session with the pupil, revealing to them how long each waste takes to degrade in the soil and the impact on their surroundings. Do some question and answer sessions with the kids as well as some environmental games. We went to Batoke where relics of the Mount Cameroon eruption can be seen and told the story of what happened. In the course of this project we also visited the Limbe Botanic Garden where they saw environmental beauty expressed. This location harbors some of the endangered plant species in Cameroon and the world. Because of the challenges we had in acquiring the nested trees, we succeeded in planting 20% of the nested trees we projected in the project in several locations of Limbe.
