OGCEYOD’S INVOLVEMENT IN TALENT BUILDING

“Loving football is synonymous to being Cameroonian.” This is a popular adage to express Cameroonians’ love for football. During this year’s summer holiday, OGCEYOD Cameroon took part in the activities of the Paco Melville Junior Football Tournament which took place in the Limbe Centenary Stadium.  It is a youth talent building activity, that has been taking place for the past seven years in Cameroon. It comes up every summer holiday where it enrolls young boys into football clubs to be trained and prepared for a football tournament. It should be noted that all the big football stars representing Cameroon’s talent all over the world today such as Eto’o Fils began their journey for greater heights from such activities.
During this year’s opening ceremony, the welcome speech of the representative from the Ministry of Youths and Sport welcomed the fans and lovers of Foot ball. He also called on God almighty to grant healing mercies to the founder/president of the tournament Mr. Paco Melville, who had a ghastly motor accident, days before the tournament. The ceremony had a symbolic debut as the kick off was done by a woman.
The 7th edition of the finals was between Riverside and Best Stars, two junior football clubs based in Limbe. The competition was a very tough one, neither team had any goal to their credits and even at the 90th minute of play the score was still zero. The match ended with a penalty kick and Best Stars, the tournament’s two times champions, proved unbeatable for the third time in this 2011 edition.
It was a sour moment for the champs of Riverside but they just need to work harder come the next edition of the tournament. OGCEYOD Cameroon made valuable contributions during the prize awards in terms of school materials such as books and magazines.
One of such magazines is the “Be In Between Magazine” published by the organization. Both team members received gifts that will help them and their families return back to school. The peak of the occasion was when the winners had to take up their trophy which was a reward for all their dedication and hard work during the summer holidays.
Reception and celebration of the end of the tournament followed suit at the Youth and Sport Center at Down Beach, Limbe. At the end of the day, the lesson these youngsters got, was that they are all winners because they made their summer remarkable by spending quality time exploiting their talent.
