....Shout out to Rio!

A series of co-ordinated events in Cameroon giving young people a chance to be heard at the UN Rio +20 summit on Sustainable Development in June 2012.

With the Rio+20 summit right around the corner, it has never been more important for children and young people in the developing world to have their say about climate change and the environment. On June 20th 2012, our world leaders will convene to discuss how to pursue sustainable development and the implementation of a green economy. Decisions made at this summit will have a direct impact on the lives of young people around the world. As the group set to be the most affected by climate change, OGCEYOD believes it is only fair that they are given a the opportunity to have their voices heard by the international representatives who will assemble in Rio Di Janeiro, Brazil.
In order to facilitate this process in Cameroon, OGCEYOD will organise a one-day workshop in Yaoundé, for around 100 young people, of many different ages and from a variety of different backgrounds. The event will take place on April 22nd 2012, in order to coincide with international Earth Day and other environmental events taking place around the world. The games, activities and exercises presented at this event will inform the group of young people about the Rio+20 summit and environmental concerns, and provide them with a forum in which to explore their own ideas about climate change and sustainable development. Taking place alongside the programme in Yaoundé OGCEYOD has planned events in three other regions, which will also take place on Earth Day. The North West, The North, South West and Central Regions will all take part. The feedback received at these events will be collated by the organisers, and used to produce a document of recommendations on behalf of these young people, to send to the Rio+20 Summit.
