YOUNG WOMEN’S ASPIRATIONS AND CHALLENGES RESEARCH

This research will be used to inform OGCEYOD about the challenges faced by young women in the Limbe area in order to ensure that future projects tackle the real issues which directly affect them. In this research OGCEYOD spoke to young women in their late teens and early 20s who are at that point in their lives where important life choices have to be made. They have left school or University and are often struggling to find work or fulfil their intended career/life paths. The research aimed to find out what their hopes for their futures are and what challenges they may face in achieving their aspirations.
The research consisted of a series of interviews and focus-groups (small group interviews). These comprised of the same broad ranging questions regarding young women’s own personal career aspirations, life goals and gender issues at their school and in society. Varied questions were asked which would draw out ideas about their life and the situation here in Cameroon.
The interviewees are taken from the following groups: Limbe Woman’s Empowerment Centre, Mokunda Multi-Purpose Umbrella Group, a group of local tailoring apprentices, and other individual young women who have interesting experiences to share such as volunteers from OGCEYOD itself.
